Accelerated ageing test to evaluate vigour in Jatropha curcas L. seeds Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Oliveira,Glauter Lima; Dias,Luiz Antônio dos Santos; Dias,Denise Cunha Fernandes dos Santos; Soares,Marcos Morais; Silva,Laércio Junio da.
There is currently great interest in the cultivation of the Jatropha curcas L., known locally as physic nut, for the production of biodiesel, leading to an increase in the demand for seeds and precise information as to their physiological quality, especially vigour. The objective was to evaluate the efficiency of the accelerated ageing test, with variations, in verifying the vigour of Jatropha seeds. Four seed lots were initially characterized as to their physiological quality by germination and vigour tests. For accelerated ageing test, temperatures of 42 and 45 ºC were tested during 48, 72 and 96 hours. The experiment was carried out in a completely randomized design and the averages of the treatments compared by Tukey test (p<0,05). The Pearson...

Factors that influence in Jatropha curcas L. latex production Bragantia
Matos,Fábio Santos; Ciappina,Angelina Luzia; Rocha,Ednaldo Candido; Almeida,Luciane Madureira.
ABSTRACT Latex from Jatropha curcas L. exhibits biotechnological potential for the development of biodiesel and drugs. Little is known about the collection methods and latex productivity of this species. In order to garner information on the use of J. curcas latex, factors that influence production by this species were assessed. As a result, no significant difference was found between the volume of latex collected in the stem and the branches. With respect to environmental characteristics, climatic conditions, such as low temperatures and rainfall, affected production. The period of low temperatures and leaf fall occurs after fruit harvest and, in the absence of strong sinks, the plant can use the assimilates to generate greater latex production. Multiple...

Brasileiro,Beatriz Gonçalves; Dias,Denise Cunha Fernandes dos Santos; Bhering,Maria Carmen; Dias,Luiz Antônio dos Santos.
The objective of this study was to characterize morphologically the seed germination and floral biology of Jatropha curcas grown in Viçosa, Minas Gerais state. The floral biology study was made on fresh inflorescences of 20 plants. For the post-seminal development study, the seeds were submitted to laboratory and greenhouse germination test. J. curcas has flowers of both sexes within the same inflorescence, with each inflorescence having an average of 131 flowers, being 120 male and 10.5 female flowers. Low numbers of hermaphrodite flowers were also found, ranging from 0 to 6 flowers per inflorescence. The germination of J. curcas begins on the third day with radicle protrusion in the hilum region. The primary root is cylindrical, thick, glabrous and...

Genome composition and pollen viability of Jatropha (Euphorbiaceae) interspecific hybrids by Genomic In Situ Hybridization (GISH) Genet. Mol. Biol.
Souza,Rosilda Cintra de; Marques,Daniela de Argollo; de Carvalho Filho,Marcel Mamede; Oliveira,Ana Rafaela da Silva; Siqueira,Walter José; Benko-Iseppon,Ana Maria; Brasileiro-Vidal,Ana Christina.
Abstract Interspecific hybridization is required for the development of Jatropha curcas L. improved cultivars, due to its narrow genetic basis. The present study aimed to analyze the parental genomic composition of F1 and BC1F1 generations derived from interspecific crosses (J. curcas/J. integerrima and J. curcas/J. multifida) by GISH (Genomic In Situ Hybridization), and the meiotic index and pollen viability of F1 hybrids. In F1 cells from both hybrids, 11 chromosomes of each parental was observed, as expected, but chromosome rearrangement events could be detected using rDNA chromosome markers, suggesting unbalanced cells. In the BC1F1, both hybrids had 22 chromosomes, suggesting that only n = 11 gametes were viable in the next generation. However, GISH...

Jatropha curcasand Ricinus communisdisplay contrasting photosynthetic mechanisms in response to environmental conditions Scientia Agricola
Lima Neto,Milton Costa; Martins,Marcio de Oliveira; Ferreira-Silva,Sérgio Luiz; Silveira,Joaquim Albenísio Gomes.
Higher plants display different adaptive strategies in photosynthesis to cope with abiotic stress. In this study, photosynthetic mechanisms and water relationships displayed byJatropha curcasL. (physic nuts) andRicinus communisL. (castor bean), in response to variations in environmental conditions, were assessed.R. communis showed higher CO2 assimilation, stomatal and mesophyll conductance thanJ. curcas as light intensity and intercellular CO2 pressure increased. On the other hand,R. communis was less effective in stomatal control in response to adverse environmental factors such as high temperature, water deficit and vapor pressure deficit, indicating lower water use efficiency. Conversely,J. curcas exhibited higher photosynthetic efficiency (gas exchange...

Karyotype and genome size comparative analyses among six species of the oilseed-bearing genus Jatropha (Euphorbiaceae) Genet. Mol. Biol.
Marinho,Anne C.T.A.; Vasconcelos,Santelmo; Vasconcelos,Emanuelle V.; Marques,Daniela A.; Benko-Iseppon,Ana Maria; Brasileiro-Vidal,Ana Christina.
Abstract Jatropha is an important genus of Euphorbiaceae, with species largely used for various purposes, including the manufacturing of soaps and pharmaceutical products and applications in the bioenergetic industry. Although there have been several studies focusing J. curcas in various aspects, the karyotype features of Jatropha species are poorly known. Therefore, we analyzed six Jatropha species through fluorochrome staining (CMA/DAPI), fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) with 5S and 45S rDNA probes and genome size estimation by flow cytometry. Our results revealed several chromosome markers by both CMA/DAPI and FISH for the analyzed species. Five Jatropha species (J. curcas, J. gossypiifolia, J. integerrima, J. multifida and J. podagrica) showed...

Lipid peroxidation and antioxidant enzymes of Jatropha curcas L. seeds stored at different maturity stages Agronomy
Silva, Laércio Junio da; Dias, Denise Cunha Fernandes dos Santos; Sekita, Marcelo Coelho; Finger, Fernando Luiz.
The objective of the present work was to investigate the antioxidant enzyme activities and the occurrence of lipid peroxidation during storage of J. curcas seeds obtained from fruits at different maturity stages. Seeds extracted from fruits collected at three stages of maturity were used, i.e., yellow, brownish-yellow, and brown (dry fruits). The seeds were subsequently stored for 18 months in Kraft paper bags in a laboratory environment. Initially as well as every three months, the seeds were evaluated for germination and electrical conductivity, and the seed embryos were evaluated for lipid peroxidation; protein content; and superoxide dismutase, peroxidase, and ascorbate peroxidase enzyme activity at the same time points. In general, the seeds from the...

Physiological quality and seed respiration of primed Jatropha curcas seeds Acta Botanica
Horbach,Micheli Angelica; Dranski,João Alexandre Lopes; Malavasi,Ubirajara Contro; Malavasi,Marlene de Matos.
ABSTRACT Seed deterioration is a natural and irreversible process. Nevertheless, seed priming with water and antioxidants can minimize oxidative damage in oilseeds, resulting in attenuation of seed deterioration. The objective of this assay was to evaluate seed priming on respiratory activity of Jatropha curcas submitted to accelerated aging. Seeds from two provenances (Janauba and Pedro J. Caballero) were submitted to three priming treatments (control, immersion in deionized water, and with 750 µmol L-1 of ascorbic acid) and treated for accelerated aging at 41 °C for 72 h. The results showed that the priming of J. curcas seeds promoted tolerance to accelerated aging. Primed seeds, with ascorbic acid from Janauba and deionized water from Pedro J....
